Before you start optimizing your site for the search engines, you would need to arm yourself with some tools to help you. What follows is a brief review of 4 software programs that we find invaluable when we are optimizing our clients' sites.

Wordtracker: The first and most important step in any search engine positioning campaign is identifying the keywords for which you should optimize your site. WordTracker's keyword research service is the only one on the Internet that will provide a comprehensive and powerful database of the most popular keywords in your industry. It has features that all other keyword research
tools lack - for instance, it will help you identify related keywords that you would otherwise never have thought of, it differentiates between singular and plural keywords and tells you which version is more popular, it helps you identify popular mis-spelled keywords (which generally have very little competition) in your industry etc. It has a free trial version which will help you identify a few keywords. Optilink: Link popularity has quickly become one of the most important factors that influence your rankings in the search engines. What is important is not only the number of sites linking to you, but the quality and relevancy of the sites that are linking to you. If you are trying to improve the link popularity of your site, until now, there has been no easy way of checking the quality and relevancy of sites that are linking to you or the quality and relevancy of sites that you are thinking of asking for links from. You could have done it manually, but it would take a tremendous amount of time. However, a new software product called Optilink automates this process to a large extent. The Importance of Having Your Domain Name

A question that I frequently hear is "Do I really need
to have my own domain name?" The one word answer is "YES.". If you put up
your site with some of the free web hosting services, the only company who benefits is the
web hosting company. The last person who benefits is you. There are a number of reasons
why having your own domain name is a must:

1) When you have your own domain name, the address of your
web site will be of the form http://www.yourcompany.com. On the other hand, if you put up
your site on one of the free servers, the address of your web site will be something like
http://www.somefreewebsite.com/yoursite/. Which of these two sounds more professional?
Which of these two is smaller and is hence easier to remember? I leave you to make the
judgement.

2) The only way to make money online is to build up
credibility among your customers. Having your own domain name is the first step in doing
that. Your customers will feel more comfortable buying whatever it is that you are selling
if you have your own domain name. It makes your customers feel that they are dealing with
a large, established company, rather than with some fly by night operator.

3) When you have your domain name, you can have multiple
email aliases of the form alias@yourcompany.com. This allows you to assign different email
aliases to different functions, all of them pointing to your actual email address. Hence,
for example, for questions related to the products and services that you sell, you can
have an email address like sales@yourcompany.com. For questions related to the newsletter
that you publish, you can have an email address like editor@yourcompany.com. For
comments/suggestions about your web site, you can direct your customers to
feedback@yourcompany.com or webmaster@yourcompany.com. Having different email addresses
for different functions not only makes it easier for you to filter your email using your
email client program (Eudora Pro, Pegasus Mail, Outlook Express etc.), but also gives your
customers the impression that yours is a large, established company with whom it is safe
to do business.

4) Many search engines give a lot of emphasis to the home
page of a particular domain, i.e. other things remaining the same, a home page of a domain
will often rank higher for a particular keyword than any other page. When you use some of
the free hosting services, your index.html page is the home page of your site, but not of
that domain. Hence in these search engines, your site will find it very difficult to make
it to the top 20 or top 30, let alone the top 10 for some of the really competitive
keywords. Just think of the amount of traffic that you will lose if this happens.

5) Some search engines are now refusing to spider the web
sites which are hosted by the free web hosts. For instance, if you have a site hosted by
the free web hosts, you would, until recently, have got the infamous error message saying
that too many pages have been submitted from your site if you tried to submit your site to
AltaVista. While Altavista now says that "your
URL has been submitted for processing" if you try to submit your site, rest assured
that it will not spider any site belonging to many of the free web hosts even though it
says that your site has been accepted. Can you afford that?

6) When your site is hosted by some of the free web hosts,
you will find it very difficult to get it listed in a major directory like Yahoo!. Although Yahoo! will never admit that it won't add
a commercial site which is hosted by one of the free web hosts, in practice, it will be a
miracle if you can get your site listed by Yahoo!. Listing your site with Yahoo! is
difficult enough even when you have your own domain. Don't make your task more difficult
than what it needs to be.

If you do not currently have a domain name, are you
convinced that you need one right now? The small fee that you pay per year for your own
domain name is peanuts compared to the benefits that you get.

Some people believe that they should create different pages for different search engines, each page optimized for one keyword and for one search engine. Now, while I don't recommend that people create different pages for different search engines, if you do decide to create such pages, there is one issue that
you need to be aware of.

These pages, although optimized for different search
engines, often turn out to be pretty similar to each other. The search engines now have
the ability to detect when a site has created such similar looking pages and are
penalizing or even banning such sites. In order to prevent your site from being penalized
for spamming, you need to prevent the search engine spiders from indexing pages which are
not meant for it, i.e. you need to prevent AltaVista
from indexing pages meant for Google and vice-versa.
The best way to do that is to use a robots.txt file.

You should create a robots.txt file using a text editor
like Windows Notepad. Don't use your word processor to create such a file.

Here is the basic syntax of the robots.txt file:

User-Agent: [Spider Name]

Disallow: [File Name]

For instance, to tell AltaVista's spider, Scooter, not to
spider the file named myfile1.html residing in the root directory of the server, you would
write

User-Agent: Scooter

Disallow: /myfile1.html

To tell Google's spider, called Googlebot, not to spider
the files myfile2.html and myfile3.html, you would write

User-Agent: Googlebot

Disallow: /myfile2.html

Disallow: /myfile3.html

You can, of course, put multiple User-Agent statements in
the same robots.txt file. Hence, to tell AltaVista not to spider the file named
myfile1.html, and to tell Google not to spider the files myfile2.html and myfile3.html,
you would write

User-Agent: Scooter

Disallow: /myfile1.html

User-Agent: Googlebot

Disallow: /myfile2.html

Disallow: /myfile3.html

If you want to prevent all robots from spidering the file
named myfile4.html, you can use the * wildcard character in the User-Agent line, i.e. you
would write

User-Agent: *

Disallow: /myfile4.html

However, you cannot use the wildcard character in the
Disallow line.

Once you have created the robots.txt file, you should
upload it to the root directory of your domain. Uploading it to any sub-directory won't
work - the robots.txt file needs to be in the root directory.

I won't discuss the syntax and structure of the robots.txt
file any further - you can get the complete specifications from http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/norobots.html

Now we come to how the robots.txt file can be used to
prevent your site from being penalized for spamming in case you are creating different
pages for different search engines. What you need to do is to prevent each search engine
from spidering pages which are not meant for it.

For simplicity, let's assume that you are targeting only
two keywords: "tourism in Australia" and "travel to Australia". Also,
let's assume that you are targeting only three of the major search engines: AltaVista, HotBot and Google.

Now, suppose you have followed the following convention for
naming the files: Each page is named by separating the individual words of the keyword for
which the page is being optimized by hyphens. To this is added the first two letters of
the name of the search engine for which the page is being optimized.

Hence, the files for AltaVista are

tourism-in-australia-al.html

travel-to-australia-al.html

The files for HotBot are

tourism-in-australia-ho.html

travel-to-australia-ho.html

The files for Google are

tourism-in-australia-go.html

travel-to-australia-go.html

As I noted earlier, AltaVista's spider is called Scooter
and Google's spider is called Googlebot.

A list of spiders for the major search engines can be found
at http://www.jafsoft.com/searchengines/webbots.html

Now, we know that HotBot uses Inktomi and from this list, we find that Inktomi's
spider is called Slurp. Using this knowledge, here's what the robots.txt file should
contain:

User-Agent: Scooter

Disallow: /tourism-in-australia-ho.html

Disallow: /travel-to-australia-ho.html

Disallow: /tourism-in-australia-go.html

Disallow: /travel-to-australia-go.html

User-Agent: Slurp

Disallow: /tourism-in-australia-al.html

Disallow: /travel-to-australia-al.html

Disallow: /tourism-in-australia-go.html

Disallow: /travel-to-australia-go.html

User-Agent: Googlebot

When you put the above lines in the robots.txt file, you
instruct each search engine not to spider the files meant for the other search engines.

When you have finished creating the robots.txt file, double-check to ensure that you have not made any errors anywhere in it. A small error can
have disastrous consequences - a search engine may spider files which are not meant for
it, in which case it can penalize your site for spamming, or, it may not spider any files
at all, in which case you won't get top rankings in that search engine.

An useful tool to check the syntax of your robots.txt file
can be found at http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~sxw/robots/check/.
While it will help you correct syntactical errors in the robots.txt file, it won't help
you correct any logical errors, for which you will still need to go through the robots.txt
thoroughly, as mentioned above.

Improving the Link Popularity of your site

Link popularity, i.e. the number of
sites which are linking to your site, is an increasingly important factor as far as search
engine placement is concerned. Other things remaining the same, more the number of links
to your site, higher will be its ranking.

What is important is not only the number of
links to your site, but also the types of sites which are linking to you. A link from a
site which is related to yours is more valuable than a link from an unrelated site.

In this article, I explore different methods
by which you can improve the link popularity of your site. I start with a method that you
shouldn't bother using, then go on to the moderately effective methods, and then end with
the most effective methods you can use to boost the link popularity of your site.

1) Submitting your site to Free For All (FFA)
pages

A common misconception among many Internet
marketers is that while FFA pages may not directly bring in traffic to your site, it will
help to improve the link popularity of your site, and hence, will indirectly bring in
traffic through the search engines.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Most
FFA pages can contain only a certain number of links at a time. This means that when you
submit your site to a FFA page, your site will be placed at the top of the page. However,
as more and more people submit their sites to the FFA page, your site will be pushed down,
and finally, when it reaches the bottom of the page, it will be removed.

Now, since you can bet that plenty of other
people are also submitting their sites to the FFA pages, your site will remain in these
pages for only a short span of time. Hence, in order to ensure that the search engines see
your site if and when they come to spider the FFA page, you will need to ensure that you
submit your site to these FFA pages on a regular basis - at least once a week.

Even if you used an automatic submission
program to do it, can you imagine a worse way to spend your time and/or money?
Furthermore, many search engines recognize these pages which only contains links to other
sites as FFA pages and may completely ignore them. And while I haven't yet seen any
evidence that submitting to the FFA pages will actually penalize your site, there is every
possibility that this might happen in the future.

Hence, when it comes to FFA pages, my advice
is simple: don't even think about them.

2) Starting an Awards Program

A moderately effective method of improving the
link popularity of your site is to start an awards program. You can have web sites which
are related to yours apply for an award from your site. The sites which win the award get
the chance to display the logo for your award. This logo is linked to your site,
preferably to a page which contains more information on the award.

If you publish a newsletter, consider
declaring the winners in your newsletter. You can also perform a review of the winners'
sites in your newsletter. This adds useful content to your newsletter and also gives more
webmasters the incentive to apply for your award, since you may review their sites in your
newsletter. This also gives them the incentive to subscribe to your newsletter to see if
they win the award.

Make sure that you give awards to only those
sites which deserve to win. If you give your award to sites which don't deserve it, your
award will have little credibility, which will, in turn, hurt the credibility of your
company. Furthermore, make sure that the logo you design for the award looks professional.
If it doesn't, not many webmasters will want to display it in their sites.

3) Giving testimonials

This may sound a bit unusual, but giving
testimonials for products or services which you find useful can be another moderately
effective way of improving the link popularity of your site. If you really like a product,
simply write to the company and tell them why you liked the product so much and how it has
helped you. Chances are, the company will write back to you to thank you for your comments
and will ask you for permission to display your comments in their web site. Tell the
company that you have no problems if they publish your comments, but request them to add a
link to your site along with the testimonial. There is every possibility that the company
will agree since publishing the URL of your web site gives more credibility to the
testimonial.

Of course, please don't go about giving
testimonials to every company you can locate just because it will improve your link
popularity :-)

4) Posting to Message Boards and Discussion
Lists

Another moderately effective method of
increasing the link popularity of your site is to post to online message boards. At the
end of every message that you post, you can sign off by mentioning your name and the URL
of your web site. If the message board allows it, you can even include a short promotional
blurb about your site at the end of your posts. However, make sure that the individual
messages that are posted to that message board are archived in static HTML pages (i.e. the
URLs for the individual messages should not contain a "?"). Otherwise, the
search engines will consider these pages to be dynamic pages and may not spider these
pages and hence, will not be able to find your link.

Email based discussion lists which are
archived on the web in static HTML pages can also be used to boost the link popularity of
your site in a similar manner. In this case, the signature file that you use with your
email program should contain the URL for your web site.

5) Starting a Link Contest

A good method of improving the link popularity
of your site is to give away prizes to other webmasters if they link to you. The prizes
that you give out should ideally be something which other webmasters will find valuable
enough to want to link to you, but which do not cost you too much. For instance, if you
publish a newsletter, and have unsold ad inventory, you can give away some free
advertisements in your newsletter to the winners. If you sell a software (or an ebook),
you can give away a free copy of your software or ebook to the winners, since it doesn't
cost you anything to produce an additional copy of digital goods like software and ebooks.

Link contests work best if you run the contest
on a continuous basis and if you declare new winners frequently. If you run the contest
for a few months, and then stop it, the webmasters who had linked to you will all remove
their links. However, if you run it on a continuous basis, and declare new winners every
month or so, the webmasters will have the incentive to keep their links to your site.

Also, make sure that you require all
participants to have a link to your site either in their home page, or in an internal page
of their site which is linked to their home page. Also ensure that the page which contains
the link is no more than two levels deep from their home page (i.e. it should not take
more than two clicks to go from the home page to the page containing the link). If they
don't do this, the search engine spiders may not index the page which contains the link to
your site, and hence, may not find your link.

6) Writing articles and allowing them to be
re-published

This is by far one of the best ways of
improving the link popularity of your site, and one of my favorites. Whenever I write an
article on search engine placement, I first publish it in my newsletter and then I publish
the article in my site as a separate web page. I also submit it to the following article
submission sites:

Many webmasters and ezine publishers frequent
these article directories in search of articles. Submitting my articles to these
directories gives them the opportunity of re-publishing my articles. While I have had some
success with each of the above directories, by far the best among them is the
ezinearticles.com directory.

Now, at the end of each article, I mention
that people are free to re-publish the article as long as they include my resource box
(i.e. my bio) at the end of the article. I always include the URL of my site in the
resource box. This means that whenever someone publishes one of my articles in his/her web
site, I have another site linking to my site. Also, many ezine publishers archive their
ezines in their web sites. If they have re-published my article in a particular issue, I
again get a link.

Writing articles is also an excellent viral
marketing tool. As some webmasters and ezine publishers publish my articles, other
webmasters and ezine publishers will read my article. Some of them, in turn, will publish
my article, which will again be read by other webmasters and ezine publishers, some of
whom will publish it... and so on.

Also, since only web sites related to mine
would be interested in publishing my articles, all these links tend to come from related
sites, which, as I mentioned earlier, are more valuable than links from unrelated sites.

Writing articles, of course, has another very
important benefit - if you write good articles, it makes you known as an expert in your
field. This helps to improve your credibility, which makes people more comfortable about
buying your products or services.

Some notes about writing articles:

i) I have learnt through experience that some
webmasters will publish other people's articles and will display the complete resource box
but will not link to the URL mentioned in the resource box. In order to prevent this, you
need to explicitly state that the article can be published only if the URL mentioned in
the resource box is linked to your site.

ii) Your resource box should not be too long -
it should be no more than 6 lines long, formatted at 65 characters per line. Otherwise,
other webmasters and ezine publishers will hesitate to publish your article.

7) Submitting to the directories

This is by far the most important step as far
as improving the link popularity of your site is concerned. As I mentioned before, what is
important is not only the number of links to your site, but also the quality of the links
to your site. No links are as important as links from some of the major directories like
Yahoo!, the Open Directory etc. However, Yahoo! currently requires a payment of $299 per
year in order to list any commercial site. Paying them $299 per year just to improve your
link popularity is probably not cost effective. But, the Open Directory is free, and you
should definitely get your site listed in the Open Directory.

Also, you should submit your site to as many
of the smaller directories as possible. You can get a list of such directories at http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Web/Searching_the_Web/Search_Engines_and_Directories/.

8) Exchanging links with other webmasters

The single-most effective way of improving the link
popularity of your site is to exchange links with other webmasters who have sites which
are related to yours, but are not direct competitors. This is called reciprocal linking.

However, the problem with this method is the sheer amount
of time it takes if you were to do it manually.

If you decide to do this manually, you can easily expect to
spend hundreds of hours on this activity alone.

Here's what you need to do:

i) You need to use the search engines to find sites related
to yours that are not direct competitors by typing in some keywords that are related to
your site.

ii) You also need to find sites that link to your
competitors.

iii) You need to visit these sites and see if they actually
exchange links.

iv) If you decide that you want to exchange links with a
particular site, you need to find out exactly how it wants you to link to it from your
site.

v) You then need to manually add a link to this site in
your site.

vi) Then, you need to find out the email address of the
owner of the website and send the owner a personalized email requesting that he/she adds a
link to your site in return.

vii) In many cases, you will not be able to locate the
email address of the owner simply because the owner has not published any email address on
the site. In that case, all the effort that you had put into evaluating whether or not the
site is suitable for exchanging links will have been a waste of time.

viii) If you do manage to locate the email address, you
need to send a personalized and customized email to the website owner.

ix) You then need to wait and see whether this site is
willing to exchange links with you.

Robogen is a software for Windows 95, Windows
98 and Windows NT based computers which can help you create robots.txt files without
having to worry about the correct syntax of a robots.txt file. It comes in two editions:
the free Limited edition and the Standard edition which costs $12.95. You can get Robogen
from http://www.rietta.com/robogen/.

In this article, I'll tell how you can use
Robogen to simplify the process of creating a robots.txt file. This article assumes that
you have read my article on what a robots.txt file is and how you can manually create it.

I would recommend that you download the trial
version of the Standard Edition. The Limited edition does not support as many search
engines as the Standard Edition.

Once you have downloaded Robogen and installed
it in your hard drive, start the program. Here are the steps that you should follow to
create a robots.txt file:

Step 1: Click on the Logon FTP Server button.
In the dialog box that appears, type in the address of the FTP server for your web site,
make sure that the "This server requires me to log in" option is checked, and
then type in the username and the password which you use to access the server in the
appropriate boxes.

Now, depending on how your web host has set up
the server, the files for your web site may be present in the root directory of the server
itself. Or, it may be present in a sub-directory of the root directory. In the latter
case, click on the "Use specified root" option and type the relevant
sub-directory in the text box besides the option. If you don't know in which sub-directory
the files for your web site are present, ask your web host to give it to you.

Done? Now click on OK. After a while, Robogen
will display the directories and files which are present in your site in the right pane of
the main Robogen program window. If you find that Robogen has not displayed the files in
your site, it means that you did not enter the correct sub-directory in which the files of
your web site are present. In this case, ask you web host to give the correct
sub-directory to you.

Step 2: In the left pane of the main Robogen
window, click on the small button present to the right of the drop-down combo box at the
top. In the menu that appears, select "Popular Search Engines".

Step 3: Now, click on the drop-down combo box
and choose the search engine that you are targeting (say, AltaVista). In the right pane, select a page which is
NOT meant for AltaVista. Now click on the "<<<" button. You will find that the file which you had selected in the right pane is now present in the left pane. In this way, click on each of the pages which are not meant for AltaVista and press the "<<<" button.

Repeat step 3 for each of the search engines
that you are targeting. Just select the search engine that you are targeting from the
drop-down combo box, select the pages which are not meant for the search engine one by one
from the right pane, and click on the "<<<" button after clicking on each age. Repeat this process for all the search engines that you are targeting.

Step 4: Upload the file to your server using
the "Upload Robots.Txt" button. If you want, you can also use the Save menu item
from the File menu to save a copy of the robots.txt file in your hard drive.

Creating Keyword Rich Pages

Once you have established the keywords for which you
should optimize your site for the search engines, it is time to figure out how you can get
a high ranking in the search engines for those keywords. The solution is to create Keyword
Rich Pages (KRPs) - pages which provide good content and in which a particular keyword is
repeated a number of times so that the page gets a top ranking for that keyword.

This article is focused on how you should create these
KRPs. I am assuming you have a working knowledge of the different HTML tags like the Title
tag, the Meta Description tag, the Meta Keywords tag, the Heading tags, the Alt Tag etc.
If you don't, just go to http://www.utoronto.ca/webdocs/HTMLdocs/NewHTML/htmlindex.html
for a good introduction to such HTML tags.

Now, let us assume that your company sells packaged tours
to Australia, and that you are targeting the keyword "travel to australia".
Here's how you create the KRPs:

The Title Tag:

The first and most important tag to consider is the Title
tag. You should always begin the Title tag with the keyword that you are targeting. Also
remember that the search engines are going to display the Title tag while they are
displaying the results of a search. Hence, you need to make the Title tag attractive to
humans as well.

Here is one Title tag that I may have used: "Travel to
Australia and discover its scenic beauty". Have a look at the Title tag - it uses the
keyword right at the beginning and also tells people how beautiful a place Australia is.

Of course, all Titles need not be like the one I used. The
Title that you use depends on the subject matter of your site. However, you should follow
all the general rules that I have outlined here.

Meta Description Tag:

The Meta Description tag is used by many search engines to
provide a short description of the page that is listed in the search results. Hence, like
the Title tag, it is important that the Meta Description tag be keyword rich as well as
attractive to humans.

The rules for the Meta Description are more or less the
same as those for the Title tag. However, the content of this tag will generally be longer
than that of the Title. Here's what I may have used in the Meta Description tag:

"Travel to Australia - We take care of all the details
of your trip so that you can travel with complete peace of mind."

Note how this description repeats the keyword and also the
benefit that it stresses - it says that the customer will be able to travel without having
to worry about the intricate details of the trip - you will take care of them.

Meta Keywords Tag:

The Meta Keywords tag has become less and less important as
far as search engine optimization is concerned. In fact, you can get top rankings without
having anything in the Meta Keywords tag at all. However, just to be on the safe side, you
would want to include some keywords in the Meta Keywords tag. You should also include some
of the common upper/lower case variations of the keyword. The rules for the Meta Keywords
tag are pretty simple - don't repeat any keyword in the Meta Keywords tag more than three
times and don't repeat any keyword one after the other. Here's what I may have used in the
Meta Keywords tag:

"Travel to Australia, tourism, travel to Australia,
Down Under, TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA"

Note how I have introduced "tourism" and
"Down Under" just to separate the different instances of the keyword.

Body of the page:

Now we come to the actual body of the page. Begin by
getting hold of a nice (but not too large) picture which is applicable for the page that
you are creating. In the present case, I might include a picture of the lotus shaped
Sydney Opera House. Place this picture at the top of the page. In the Alt tag for the
picture, just mention your target keyword once, i.e. the Alt tag would be "Travel to
Australia". You can include other words in the Alt tag, but it should start with the
keyword you are targeting.

Once you've put up the picture, it is time to create a
Heading for your page. Use the H1 tag to do so. Again, in the H1 tag, mention your target
keyword once, i.e. like the Alt tag for the picture, the H1 tag could be "Travel to
Australia". Again, like the Alt tag, you can include other words in the heading, but
the heading should start with the keyword you are targeting.

Now it's time to create the actual text of the page. The
way you create the text of your page would depend largely on what you want the visitor to
do after reading this page. In some cases, you may simply want the visitor to go to the
home page or another specific page in your site after reading this page. In this case, you
should write the text in such a way that the visitor is attracted to the page that you are
targeting. You would also want to provide links to the home page or the specific page that
you are targeting at strategic places in the KRP. Or, you may want the visitor to click on
the link to an affiliate program that you are a member of. In this case, you would stress
the benefits that the visitor gets by purchasing the product or service that the affiliate
program is selling. You would also want to provide links to the affiliate program at
strategic places in the page and/or at the end of the page. Whatever it is that you want
your page to do, there are some general rules to follow:

1) The first thing to remember is that some search engines
don't recognize the Meta Description tag. These search engines will often simply take the
first few lines of text in the body of your page and display that as the description.
Hence, you must ensure that the first few lines of text in your page are attractive to
human beings.

2) Ensure that as many sentences as possible in the page
contain your target keyword once. The keyword shouldn't just be placed on an ad hoc basis
- the way the keyword is placed in every sentence should actually make grammatical sense
and the repetition should be such that your human visitors do not feel that you have
deliberately repeated a particular phrase throughout the page. This is not only important
from the point of view of ensuring that your readers don't get a bad impression of your
site, but also from the point of view of search engine optimization - the search engines
may penalize your page for spamming if they find that you have randomly repeated the
keyword throughout the page. Also, while repeating the keyword in the page, try to repeat
the keyword once near the top of the page and once near the bottom.

3) Make sure that your paragraphs are not too long - each
paragraph should be no more than 3 or 4 sentences long. This is because people on the web
simply don't have the time or the inclination to read long paragraphs.

4) Try to ensure that the page contains links to other
pages with the keyword being present in the text under the link. This can often lead to a
higher ranking for your page.

5) If possible, link to other pages which have the keyword
in the file names. This can again lead to a higher ranking for your page.

6) There is no hard and fast rule regarding the total
number of words that should be present in the KRPs. As a rule of thumb, try to ensure that
there are between 500-600 words. However, if the number of words falls a bit short of or
exceeds this limit, don't worry too much.

Once you have created the page, ensure that the name of the
file in which it is saved contains the keyword and that the individual words of the
keyword are separated by hyphens. In this case, the name of the file would be
travel-to-australia.html. This will get you a higher ranking in the few search engines
which give a lot of emphasis on the keyword being present in the file name.

That's it! When you want to target another keyword,
simply create another KRP for it using the procedure outlined above.

After you have created the KRPs, you cannot simply upload
them to your site and submit them to the search engines. This is because the search
engines take a rather dim view of pages which only contain outgoing links to other pages
but do not contain any incoming links from other pages. The search engines may penalize
sites which have such pages.

What you need to do is to directly or indirectly link the
KRPs with your home page. If you are going to create many KRPs for your site, it will be
impractical to link the home page directly with all the KRPs as this will needlessly
clutter your home page. Hence, what you should do is to create a separate page in your
site called a Sitemap page (name it something like sitemap.html). Add links to all the
KRPs from the Sitemap page. The text that you use to link to a particular KRP should be
the same as the keyword that the KRP is being optimized for. Hence, the link to the
travel-to-australia.html file should say "Travel to Australia".

Now, some search engines refuse to spider pages which only
contain links to other pages and nothing else. Hence, if the Sitemap page only contains
links to the KRPs but contains no other content, the search engines may ignore this page.
Hence, what you can do is to add a short description of the content of each of the KRPs
after you have added a link to that KRP in the Sitemap page. This ensures that the search
engines will not ignore this page.

After doing all this, simply link the home page of your
site with the Sitemap page using a text link. Then, submit your home page, the Sitemap
page and each of the KRPs to the search engines. When you are submitting these pages, to
be on the safe side, make sure that you submit no more than 1 page per day to any search
engine - otherwise, you run the risk of some search engines ignoring some of the pages you
have submitted. You can submit your site by going to the individual "Add URL"
pages of each engine. Or, in order to save time, you can use our free submission tool
which helps you submit your site manually to the search engines, without having to go to
the individual "Add URL" pages of each engine.

Follow all the rules that I have outlined in this article
and you can soon see your search engine blues disappear for ever!

Choosing the correct keywords for a site

In this article, we focus on the correct way of finding out
the keywords for which you should optimize your site for the search engines. This article will give you the formula for the Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI) - a mathematical formula which I have developed to help you determine which keywords you should be optimizing your site for.

Step 1: Open your text editor or word processor and write down all the words and phrases that you might have searched for if you were looking for a company which offers products and services similar to yours. For example, suppose your company organizes packaged tours to Australia. Here's a list of phrases that I might have searched for if I were planning to make a trip to Australia:

travel to Australia

travelling in Australia

travel agencies in Australia

travelling agencies in Australia

Australian travel agencies

Of course, the keywords that came to your mind may have
been different. But that's not important - the important thing is to get an initial list
of keywords.

You may be wondering why I have not used single word
keywords. Here's why:

Firstly, single word keywords tend to be hyper-competitive.
A search for "tourism" or "travelling" in any search engine will
probably generate hundreds of thousands of pages. While it is possible that you may get
your page in the top 10 for such a single word keyword, it is quite unlikely.

Secondly, because of the sheer number of pages that single
word searches can throw up, most search engine users have realized that they can get more
relevant pages if they search for phrases rather than individual words. Statistical
research has shown that most people are now searching for 2 or 3 word phrases rather than
for single words.

Thirdly, single word keywords won't get you targeted
traffic. When people search for "tourism", they are not necessarily looking for
tourist destinations in Australia - they may be interested in any other country of the
world. Even if you got your site into the top 10 for tourism, you gain nothing from such
visitors. However, when someone searches for "tourism in Australia", he/she is
your potential customer, and hence, it makes sense for you to try and get a top ranking
for your site for that keyword. Hence, whenever you are trying to generate keywords, try
to be location specific. Try to think of keywords which apply to the geographic area that
your product or service is designed to serve.

Step 2: Open any spreadsheet program that is installed in
your hard drive. I assume you are using Microsoft Excel. If you are using some other
spreadsheet program, just change the spreadsheet related procedures outlined here to fit
your program.

Create 4 columns - one for the keyword, one for the
popularity of the keyword, one for the number of sites that appear in AltaVista for that
keyword and the last for something I call the Keyword Effectiveness Index (don't worry -
I'll explain what KEI means later on). In order to ensure that you can follow what I am
saying, I recommend that you add the following column headers to the first four columns of
the first row of your spreadsheet:

own spreadsheet, download the keywords.zip file
The file contains a sample spreadsheet in Excel 97 format.

Step 3: A great way to obtain a list of keywords related to
the ones you have developed in the first step is to use WordTracker's keyword generation
service

Click on the "Trial" option at the top of the
site. In the page that appears, type in your name and email address and click on the
"Start the trial >>" button. In the next page, click on "Click here
to start the trial". In the next page, type in the first keyword that you developed
in Step 1, i.e. "tourism in Australia", in the text box. Click on the
"Proceed >>" button.

Step 4: In the next page, WordTracker will display a list
of keywords related to the keyword that you had typed in. (Just scroll down the left pane
to see the keywords). Now, click on the first keyword in the left pane which is applicable
for your site. In the right pane, WordTracker will show a list of keywords which contain
the keyword you had clicked on in the left pane. Then in the table that you have created
in your spreadsheet, copy each of the keywords in the right pane and paste them in the
first column of the table. Also, copy the number of times those keywords have been used
(i.e. the figure present in the Count column in WordTracker) and paste them in the second
column. In order to ensure that you can follow me, make sure that you type the first
keyword in the second row of your spreadsheet. Of course, you should only bother adding a
keyword to your spreadsheet if it is applicable for your site.

Once you have added all the keywords in the right pane
which are applicable for your site, click on the next keyword in the left pane which is
applicable for your site. Once again, WordTracker will display a list of keywords in the
right pane which contain the keyword you had clicked on in the left pane. Again, copy the
keywords in the right pane which are applicable for your site and paste them in the first
column of your spreadsheet. Also, copy the figures present in the Count column and paste
them in the second column beside the corresponding keywords. Repeat this process for each
of the keywords in the left pane.

Step 5: Once you have finished with all the keywords in the
left pane, press your browser's Back button a number of times until WordTracker again
displays the text box which asks you to type in a keyword. Type in the second keyword in
your original list (i.e. "travel to Australia"), click on the "Proceed
>>" button and repeat Step 4. Do this for each of the keywords that you
developed in Step 1.

Step 6: Go to AltaVista.
Search for the first keyword that is present in your spreadsheet using exact match search
(i.e. you should wrap the keyword in quotes, i.e. you should type a quotation mark before
typing the keyword and a quotation mark after typing it). AltaVista will return the number
of sites which are relevant to that keyword. Add this number to the third column of the
spreadsheet in the same row in which the keyword is present. Repeat this process for each
of the keywords present in your spreadsheet. Once you have done that, your first column
will contain the keywords, your second column will show the popularity of the keywords and
your third column will contain the number of sites you are competing against to get a high
ranking for those keywords.

Now it's time to calculate the KEI!

Step 7: The Keyword Effectiveness Index is the square of
the popularity of a keyword multiplied by 1000 and divided by the number of sites which
appear in AltaVista for that keyword. It is designed to measure which keywords are worth
optimizing your site for. Higher the KEI, better the keyword. How the formula for the KEI
is arrived at is beyond the scope of this article.

If you had used the spreadsheet file that I created for you
(see Step 2), you won't need to enter the formula for calculating the KEI yourself. The
KEI would be automatically calculated for you the moment you enter the values in columns 2
and 3. You can go straight to Step 8.

In case you didn't download the file, here's how you can
calculate the KEI.

I am assuming that you have created the spreadsheet columns
in the way I recommended in Step 3 and that you are using Microsoft Excel. If you using
some other spreadsheet program, you will need to adjust the formula to the requirements of
your spreadsheet program. Click on cell D2. Type in the following exactly as it is shown:

=IF(C2<>0,B2^2/C2*1000,B2^2*1000)

Then click on the Copy button to copy the formula, select
all the cells in column 4 which have keywords associated with them and press the Paste
button to paste the formula. The KEI for each keyword will be displayed.

Step 8: Use your spreadsheet program's Sort feature to sort
the rows in descending order of the KEI. In Excel 97, you would click on the Data menu,
click on the Sort menu item, choose KEI from the drop-down combo box named "Sort
by", click on the "Descending" option next to it, and then click on OK.

And guess what - that's it! You now know the keywords which
you should optimize your site for. You can now start optimizing your site one by one for
each keyword, starting with the keyword with the highest KEI. Exactly how many of the
keywords you choose to optimize your site for largely depends on the amount of time that
you can spare from your normal business activities. But whatever the number of keywords
that you target, it obviously makes sense to go for the most effective keywords first.

Tying up the loose ends:

The number of related keywords that WordTracker
displays in the trial version is limited. In order to get all the keywords which are
related to the keywords you had developed in Step 1, you would need to subscribe to
WordTracker's paid service. We highly recommend that you do subscribe to WordTracker's
paid service as otherwise, you will miss out on a lot of keywords that can prove to be
extremely valuable to you.

Why 2 Tier Programs Are Better Than a 1 Tier?

A frequent question we receive from affiliates is : "why are 2 tier programs better than a 1 tier?".

The obvious perspective is that you earn more money from a 2 tier or 3 tier program for the same amount of effort. Let me explain :

1) Any effort generating business for a single tier program, will also net that program new affiliates. In effect you are creating your own competition, which in turn will reduce your income and increase your costs to get the same business as before. Compared to a 2 tier program where you are paid on going compensation for bringing in more affiliates that help to make the program stronger.

Now look at the less obvious facts.

2) By far the biggest percentage of fly-by-night programs start and finish as a 1 tier.
3) A group of people working as a team do a better job monitoring programs - rather than affiliates working in a void, with their only contact an affiliate manager. This is particularly important when it comes down to missing commission pays.
4) If you are a small to medium size affiliate and you see the program is ripping you off - who will fight on your side. If you have no downline or upline, you have no power and you are ignored.
5) If a group of customers have missed deliveries you are more likely to find out if you are working with a team of other affiliates than if you are by yourself in a single tier.

The counter to the above by some inexperienced affiliate managers may be that your 1st tier pay is higher. Rubbish - after 5 years in this business, we have calculated you would need a minimum of 35% commission against the standard 20 to 25% to offset a good 2 tier program. So unless you are a very big affiliate getting 35% plus a significant repeat order commission of at least 20%, you will lose promoting single tier. Therefore, at the high payout levels, programs actually pay higher commissions to fewer strong affiliates. Small and medium sized affiliates really miss out.

The best affiliate programs promote the advantages of their 2 tier approach. Why? Because they know a 2 tier approach gives them better bottom-line results. Their programs are more effectively promoted in a cooperative rather than combative atmosphere. They also are in for the long run and know that happier affiliates will generate better program sales.

Google (Profile, Products, Articles) has introduced a feature into its AdSense advertising program that increases the number of text ads tied to a Web page. The feature, called Ad Links, also improves the relevance between the ads and the Web page's content.

In the AdSense program, Web site publishers insert Google code into their Web pages, which generates text ads that are relevant to each page's content. The ads are sold by Google to advertisers and are distributed to publishers who participate in AdSense. When a visitor clicks on an ad, Google pays the publisher.

Google believes Ad Links will benefit Web site visitors, advertisers and publishers, said Shuman Ghosemajumder, Ad Links product manager. "It helps users by giving them a greater choice of ads they can select from. Meanwhile, advertisers benefit from additional distribution they're gaining. And for publishers there's a higher likelihood visitors will click on ads," he said.

Ad Links has been designed as a complement to the contextual ads served through AdSense. Publishers who sign up for Ad Links will still receive the AdSense ads. But with Ad Links, publishers will also get a list of topics that are contextually related to the content of their page. When a visitor clicks on an item on that topic list, he is taken to another Web page with related text ads.

For example, a page about vacationing in Hawaii will feature AdSense text ads about that content. But it's possible that not all visitors who land on that page are looking specifically for information about vacationing in Hawaii. They may be looking for other type of information about Hawaii or about vacationing in general, he said.

In that case, the visitor is unlikely to click on the AdSense ads. However, with Ad Links, the page could feature a list of topics related to Hawaii and vacationing, which, when clicked upon, would serve up corresponding ads, broadening both the scope and quantity of the ads available to the visitor.

The Ad Links topic list has been designed to be unobtrusive and not clutter the space devoted to ads on a page, Ghosemajumder said. "It integrates very well with the navigation structure of sites," he said. The Ad Links feature is ready now and is already being implemented by Web site publishers, he said. It is available in the 22 languages AdSense supports.

Another enhancement Mountain View, California-based Google is readying is the ability for publishers to have AdSense payments deposited directly into their bank accounts via Electronic Funds Transfer technology, he said. This feature is currently being tested.

Submitting your site to the Open Directory

Getting your site an optimum listing in
the Open Directory (http://www.dmoz.org) is vitally
important as far as search engine positioning is concerned as Google gives a lot of importance to sites being listed in
the Open Directory.

In this article, we focus on how you can get
your site an optimum listing in the Open Directory. Even if your site is already listed in
the Open Directory, you should read this article to find out how you can get multiple
listings in the Open Directory.

Before you submit your site, go through your
entire site and ensure that there are no missing graphics, no links leading to empty or
non-existent pages and no "Under construction" symbols. Also, check for typos
and grammatical errors. Furthermore, your site must provide good content. If your site
simply contains links to various affiliate programs, you will find it difficult to get
through. The Open Directory does not mind sites containing links to affiliate programs, as
long as you provide proper content.

You now need to select the two most important
keywords for your site based on their popularity. If you don't yet know the keywords which
are applicable for your site, have a look at my article on "Choosing the correct
keywords for your site"
In this article, I have mentioned that while selecting the keywords for your site, you
should look at both the popularity of the keywords as well as their competitiveness.
However, for the purpose of this article, don't worry about the competitiveness - select
keywords only on the basis of popularity.

We now discuss how you should write the Title
and Description of your site's listing in the Open Directory. You don't really have much
choice regarding the Title as the Open Directory insists that the Title be the official
name of your site. There is no way around it.

When you write the description, your aim
should be to make the Open Directory editor's job as easy as possible. You should not give
the editor the feeling that he/she needs to edit your description in any way. The moment
an editor starts to edit your description, you risk having your keywords removed from your
description.

Your description should be a single sentence
which conveys what your site is all about and contains the two keywords you are targeting
as close as possible to the beginning of the description. However, your description should
not just be a list of keywords - the description that you use should be a proper sentence
and should be grammatically correct.

Broadly, here are the rules that you should
remember when forming the description:

i) Make sure that the description can tell a
visitor what your site is all about. Things like "Have a look at our site" or
"Welcome to my site" does not tell a visitor what your site does.

ii) Avoid hype of any sort. Avoid using ALL
CAPS or exclamation marks. Phrases like "The best web site dealing with
widgets!!" or "Offers the BEST QUALITY, CHEAPEST WIDGETS you can find
anywhere" are inappropriate.

iii) Don't capitalize every word in your
description - capitalize only the first word. Of course, if some of the words in the
description are proper nouns, then you should capitalize them.

iv) Write the description in the third person.
Don't say "We offer financial planning and credit counseling services", say
"Offers financial planning and credit counseling services.".

v) Don't make your description too long -
limit yourself to 15 words at the most. If you are lucky, you may be able to get accepted
with a description longer than 15 words. However, longer the description, higher the
probability that the editor will want to edit it.

vi) Check your description for typos and
grammatical mistakes.

vii) End your description with a period. If
the editor has to add the period to the end of your description, she may also end up
editing the description, which is not what you want. Your aim is to have the editor accept
the exact description that you had written in order to ensure that your keywords are not
removed from the description.

Now, we come to how you can select the right
category for your site. Go to the Open Directory, and search for the two keywords you have
established. Does a particular category come up at the top for both the keywords? If so,
go to that category, and see whether the sites present in the category are similar to
yours. Also see whether that category has a Description and/or a FAQ. Read them and find
out whether that category is applicable for your site. If so, this is the category you
should submit your site to.

If different categories come up at the top for
the two keywords, go through all the categories and find out which is the most appropriate
category among the different categories.

For some keywords, you will find that the Open
Directory does not display any categories. In this case, find out which category most of
the top sites belong to and submit your site to that category, assuming it is applicable
for your site.

Once you have selected the right category,
click on the "add URL" link at the top. Type in the address of your site in the
first text box, the official name of your site in the next text box, the description that
you have earlier developed in the third text box and your email address in the fourth text
box. Although the Open Directory says that including the email address is optional, I
would recommend that you include it - if, for some reason, your site is not accepted, the
Open Directory editor may want to tell you why your site has not been accepted.

What to do if your site is not accepted

After submitting your site, go to the category
where you have submitted your site every day and see when your site gets listed. If you
find that your site is not in that category, it may so happen that you have been placed in
a different category. Type in your domain name in Open Directory's search box and see
whether your site comes up in the results. I have seen some sites getting accepted within
1 day and some sites in about 2-3 weeks.

If your site has not been listed after three
weeks, then re-submit it to the same category and wait for another three weeks. If your
site is still not accepted, then have a look at your site again. Does it contain any
missing images or links, links to empty pages or under construction signs? Does it provide
good content? Does it have any spelling or grammatical errors?

If you are absolutely convinced that your site
is eligible for being accepted by the Open Directory, then the fact that your site is not
being accepted may signify one of two things:

i) The editor of that category is inactive,
i.e. he/she has not been reviewing sites for a long time.

ii) He/she is your competitor, and does not
want to list you.

In this case, the first step is to write to
the editor of the category. Scroll down to the bottom of the category to which you are
trying to submit your site and click on the name of the editor. If that category does not
have an editor, go to the category above that in the hierarchy. For instance, suppose you
are trying to submit to the Computers: Consultants: Business Systems category. At the time
of writing of this article, that category did not have an editor. In this case, you should
go to the Computers: Consultants category and click on one of the editors there. Click on
the "Send to editorname" link, and in the Comments field, write a very polite
message to the editor. Tell her that you have been trying to submit your site to the Open
Directory and you have been unsuccessful. Give her the complete details of your
submission, i.e. the category to which you submitted, your URL, the Title and the
Description that you used and the dates on which you submitted. Ask her as to whether
there are any mistakes that you are making and whether she would be kind enough to point
out the mistakes to you so that you can correct them.

If, after two weeks, you don't get any reply
from the editor and are not accepted into the Open Directory, then look for another category which is applicable for your site using the method outlined earlier and submit your site to this category.

Getting Multiple Listings in the Open Directory

If you have already got your site listed in
the Open Directory, you may try and get your site some additional listings in it. Begin by
selecting two keywords which are different from the keywords you selected earlier. Then
try and locate another category which is applicable for your site and submit your site
there with a new description which contains the two new keywords you have selected.

If you are lucky, you may be able to get a
listing in this new category, especially if the editor of this category is different from
the editor of the category where your site is already listed. Again, if the second
category to which you want to submit your site is a regional category (i.e. a category
applicable to the geographical region in which your company is located), that again
improves your chance of getting a second listing. Alternatively, if you were originally
listed in one of the regional categories, then getting your site listed in one of the
general categories is also possible, assuming that the products or services you are selling are not
intended for a regional market only.

However, you have a much better chance of
getting a second listing if you submit one of the internal pages of your site to a
different category (assuming you can locate a category which is applicable for that
particular page), rather than again submitting the home page. Submitting an internal page
has the benefit that the Title no longer needs to be the official name of your site. This
allows you to include keywords in the Title. Before submitting one of the internal pages
of your site, you should change the title of the page (here, by "title", I mean
the Title tag of the page, i.e. the Title that is displayed at the top of the browser
window when the page is opened) to the Title that you want the page to be listed under in
the Open Directory. This improves the chance that the Open Directory editor will accept
the title that you had submitted.

However, don't go overboard with submitting
internal pages - you can be penalized for spamming. Don't start submitting any doorway
pages that you have created - they will be rejected. Any internal page that you submit
must provide some unique content and must be relevant to the category to which you want to
submit the page.

Merchants or advertisers please answer emails come from your affiliates.

Dropping inactive affiliates

How often do you drop non-active affiliates from your list? Many affiliates will sign up for many programs in a specific network so that when they are ready to run a test they will already be a member. Does purging affiliates really save that much time in reporting, communicating and cost? An affiliate who took the time to sign-up for your program could have great potential, affiliates belong to far more programs than they market today, please don’t purge us.

Providing Lots of Coupon Codes

How often do you send out coupon codes to your affiliates? Please use auto-updating/dynamic text links and banner links for your coupons. Do not expect thousands of your affiliates to update their sites for your changing coupon codes individually from day to day. Do it once on the merchant side!

Are these codes ones that customers must enter during the checkout process? If a search arbitrager is linking to your site directly from a Google ad, there is very little chance the affiliate has room to communicate the code, and even less chance that if they did the customer would remember to type it in. Coupons may be a great way to drive sales on your site though, so how can they work for arbitragers?

A better option would be to provide a landing page that sells the customer and promotes the coupon code, the best option would be to embed the code in the link, so that the customer’s don’t have to do anything but click on the ad and the offer detailed on the landing page, and is automatically included when they check out. It is important to mention the offer on the landing page, Google requires that any offer referenced in the ad must be available within 1 click on the landing page, otherwise the ads will be disabled.

Asking Affiliates to Change Links or Ad Copy

How often do affiliates have to change their Ads for your program? If you make a change that breaks old links, typical website affiliates might just have a broken link on their site, but pay-per-click affiliates may be paying to drive traffic to error pages which will cost them money with each click to an error page.

Google determines the ranking of an ad based on the amount the affiliate is willing to pay per click as well as the click through rate of the ad for that specific keyword term. As ads are run over time, they build up position for important keywords, and if the ads are modified in any way, Google considers these ads new, and affiliates may have to pay more to maintain their ranking or risk driving less traffic and generating less sales. Always do what you can to make asking affiliates to change their ads, the last resort.

Not Understanding the Metrics

Understanding your affiliates financial model is critical to the success of any program. How do you determine how much you are going to pay affiliates? You need to know their metrics before you should answer this question.

Pay-Per-Click Search affiliate pay for every click and often lose money. That is important, so let me repeat it. THEY OFTEN LOSE MONEY. These affiliates will often test a lot of programs to see which ones will have the best return per click. There are typically 3 possible outcomes of a test:

The ads lose money, and the test and relationship is over (note, they don’t usually tell you it’s over, they just pause their ads and move on to the next test)

The ads generate a small return per click. These may remain as ongoing tests until they start losing money.

The ads generate a good return per click, these are the companies that the affiliates fully engage and do additional keyword research, build out sites, or otherwise grow their revenue stream.

There are really 3 key variables that determine the revenue per click, two of which are more controlled by the merchant and one in direct control of the affiliate. The merchant controls the amount of commission they are willing to pay and what the customer’s experience when they reach the merchant’s site, which results in a conversion rate of the traffic that the affiliate sends.

Affiliates control how much they are willing to pay per click. The amount that the affiliate makes per click is equal to the commission rate times the conversion rate percentage, less the cost per click.

Running Pop-up Ads

Pop-up ads can be an effective way for merchants to drive more sales and promote new features to their customers, but can have a drastic affect on your pay-per-click search affiliates. If the landing pages you allow your affiliates to link to have pop-ups your affiliates paid ads are going to get disabled.

Difficult Display url Policy

Some merchants allow affiliates to link directly to their site via affiliate links, but have a policy of not allowing affiliates to use their domain name in the display url of their ads. This can confuse customers because they see one URL in the ad, but end up somewhere else. This policy often is a pre-courser for not allowing affiliates to link directly to the merchant’s site and forcing them to build their own site to market the company or abandon the company’s program all together. Finally, Google has a policy that display urls must match the landing page url, so this policy often forces pay-per-click search affiliates to market for your competition.

Trademark Bidding Policy

Some merchants do not allow affiliates to bid on the companies name. I have found that bidding on a companies name and variations of their name often provide me a good indication of how well the site can convert traffic. If the site can’t sell people who are typing their name into a search engine, than they won’t convert any of the other more generic keyword traffic I could send them.

As you saw in the metrics, promoting a site with a poor conversion rate can cost an affiliate a lot of money. Additionally, many merchants have used affiliates bidding on their trademarks as a way to block competitors ads on those marks from appearing on the first screen.

With the Geico decision and Google’s new single ad per url policy in place, it will be harder and harder for companies to keep competitors from bidding on their names. Working with top affiliates creatively here could be very important.

Finally, if you must have a no trademark bidding policy, be specific and give affiliates a specific list of terms that they are not allowed to bid on. Also, when you make this list be smart and don’t include generic terms, even if they are part of your name, because you can bet your competitor’s and their affiliates will be bidding on those generic terms.

Indirect Trademark Bidding Policy

Some merchants have adopted a policy of not only preventing affiliates from bidding on their trademarks directly, but preventing them from accidentally showing up under these terms indirectly. An example of this would be if you were one of the top flower companies on the Internet, and your affiliates might not be able to bid on the term flowers because the search engines might match the term flowers with keyword searches for your brand name, pro flowers, 1-800-flowers, or flowers direct.

The only way an affiliate could bid on these terms would be to implement a specific list of negative terms that their ads are not allowed to show for. If you adopt this type of policy, and your competitors don’t, their affiliate’s ads will show up on your terms even though they are not bidding on them directly.

Not Understanding the Technology

Remember your policies have to work with the current technology, and some policies can have un-foreseen consequences. For example:

I have recently seen more and more default trademark policy language on Commission Junction’s merchants preventing direct and indirect bidding on companies marks and misspelled variations. The technological consequence of this is that pay-per-click affiliates who decide to participate in the program cannot bid on any term using broad or phrased match, because it is impossible for them to ad negative terms for every misspelled possibility, especially when Overture only allows 15 negative terms.

The technical result of not allowing affiliates to use the company domain in their display url is disabled ads or poor user experience.

The technical result of putting pop-up ads on your site, is disabling existing pay-per-click affiliates ads and new affiliates never running tests to see if they want to market your program.

The technical result of asking affiliates to change their ads is affiliates losing rankings in their ads, higher costs for your affiliates and reduced results in your program.

Finally, the result of not understanding the technology, is more affiliates marketing for your competition who do understand the technology.

Yahoo is poised to launch an ad network YPN for small Web publishers styled on a similar offering from Google Adsense. While Yahoo and Google already go head to head for major search-advertising partners such as America Online, Google has largely enjoyed a monopoly serving its signature text-only ads to smaller publisher Web sites, including mushrooming blogs. Yahoo is busy looking for new revenue sources as it seeks to transform itself into an online media conglomerate and beat Google in the Web search game.

Yahoo's self-serve product will display text ads deemed relevant to the content of specific Web pages. Advertisers pay only when a reader clicks on their ad. Yahoo and publishers will split the fees. In a further sign that a launch may be imminent, text ads have recently been spotted on some Yahoo employee blogs. Bringing ads to small publishers would expand Yahoo's current advertising portfolio, which caters to its search engine and larger Web sites.

Yahoo's Overture subsidiary, which will be renamed Yahoo Search Marketing next month, has served ads to publisher Web pages since 2003, in a program called Content Match. The service is designed for large publishers, such as The Financial Times, and requires a vetting process to ensure quality when it comes to matching pages with ads. Yahoo has shown increasing interest in courting small publishers of late.

CYBERSPACE - If you’ve noticed your Website traffic slipping despite your best efforts to maintain a good page ranking in Google, you may have become the victim of an easily accomplished page-redirect scheme that seems to be gaining in popularity.

Apparently in active use maliciously since at least August 2003, an exploit known commonly as Google 302 Pagejacking or simply Googlejacking allows the careless and the ethically challenged to supplant competitors’ legitimate Google search results with imposter pages. According to a poster known as “japanese” on the mainstream Web-master forum Webmaster World, “All pagerank [sic] sites of 5 or below are susceptible. If your site is 3 or 4, then be very alarmed.”

Google and MSN Search appear to be particularly vulnerable to the exploit, although other search engines are subject to it as well. That’s because the exploit uses the way core search engine technologies react to PHP and other redirect scripts that use the 302 redirect code. Unlike the more properly used 301 redirect code, which means a page has been moved permanently, the 302 code indicates a temporary relocation. The way search engine spiders react to it, in combination with how they interact with each other, can lead them to believe a legitimate page linked to using a 302 code is a duplicate of or a supplement to the page that bears the link. In a worst-case scenario that has resulted in disaster for at least one Adult industry Website, the “imposter” page can literally assume the identity of the target.

Daze Reader’s Sex News Blog became a casualty of the exploit in early March, according to its Webmaster. “Over four-plus years, Daze Reader had built up a solid ranking and steady stream of traffic from Google,” he posted on March 4. “Then, on December 17 … my daily Google traffic dropped by more than 90 percent. At first I just waited for a correction, but nothing changed…. My best guess is that Daze Reader has fallen victim to [a] scam involving bogus 302 redirects…. My Google referrals for March 1-2 were approximately 1 percent of my average level of last November.

“Figure I might as well make it official: Daze Reader is on sabbatical.”

It’s unknown how widely the exploit is employed within and to target the Adult industry. Neither noted search engine expert Scott “Traffic Dude” Rabinowitz nor Adult industry technology consultant Brandon Shalton were aware of any specific industry insiders who have been plagued by mysteriously disappearing page rankings. Sex.com owner Gary Kremen noted, “There’s no doubt in my mind it’s happening. I know it’s going on. I’ve heard people talking about it, but they’re keeping mum about it because they’re making money from it.”

Perhaps the worst news for Webmasters is that there isn’t much that can be done about the page hijacking, except to convince the search engines to change the way their spiders behave. Yahoo! did just that last October, after admitting publicly that the problem existed. According to a post at SearchEngineWatch by a Yahoo! representative who goes by the online handle TheOtherTim, “We recently revamped the way we handle redirects in Yahoo! search. We have documented the behaviors of 301s, 302s, and meta refresh redirects…. The presentation is available for download on the Yahoo! Search Blog and is called ‘Search Engines and Webmasters.’”

It should be noted that at least one search engine expert believes the majority of page hijackings accomplished through 302 redirection of search engine spiders is unintentional. Claus Schmidt, founder of the Internet consulting firm clsc.net, wrote in his analysis of the situation, “This is a flaw on the technical side of the search engines. Some Webmasters do of course exploit this flaw, but almost all cases I've seen are not a deliberate attempt at hijacking. The hijacker and the target are equally innocent as this is something that happens internally in the search engines, and in almost all cases the hijacker does not even know that s/he is hijacking another page.

“It is important to stress that this is a search engine flaw,” Scmidt continued. “It affects innocent and un-knowing Webmasters as these Webmasters go about doing their normal routines, maintaining their pages and links as usual. It is not so that you have to take steps that are in any way outside of the ‘normal’ or ‘default’ in order to either become hijacked or hijack others. On the contrary, page hijacks are accomplished using everyday standard procedures and techniques used by most Webmasters.”

How can a Webmaster tell if his or her page has been Googlejacked? For starters, type “allinurl:yourdomain.com” in the search box at Google to see what comes up. The subject domain should lead the list. If there are other entries on the page bearing the correct page title and excerpt – and in some cases, cached result – but incorrect URLs, chances are good the page has been targeted by a Googlejack, accidental or otherwise.

Fixing the problem is not as easy as determining if it exists. Webmasters can’t ban 302 referrers or most redirect scripts because servers don’t receive that information during connection requests. Click-throughs from the redirect script-bearing page can be banned, but that will only affect surfers and not search engine spiders, where the problem resides. Webmasters can request the removal of pages from Google, but that’s a lengthy, tedious process that only works within specific parameters.

Schmidt suggests several steps Webmasters can take to minimize the chances that their pages will be hijacked:

Always redirect “non-www” domains (yourdomain.com) to the www version (www.yourdomain.com) or vice-versa, and do it using a 301 code instead of a 302 code.
Always use absolute internal linking on Websites (include the full domain name in links that are pointing from one page to another page within the same site).
Include a bit of constantly updated content on all pages, like a time stamp, a random quote, or a page counter.
Use the meta tag on all pages.
Make all pages confirm their URL “artificially” by inserting a 302 redirect from any URL to the exact same URL and then serving a “200 OK” status code.
Schmidt also suggests that Webmasters take precautions to avoid becoming inadvertent hijackers:

Always use 301 redirects instead of 302 redirects or disallow redirect scripts in the “robots.txt” file or both.
Request removal of all redirect script URLs from Google’s index. Simply including the URLs in the robots.txt file won’t remove them from Google. That move just ensures the URLs are not revisited by Google spiders.
If you discover that one of your pages has hijacked someone else’s in Google’s index accidentally, make the script in question return a 404 (page not found) error and then request removal of the script from Google’s index.

When it comes to framed sites and the effect
that the use of frames by a site has on its search engine ranking, there are two schools
of thought. Some people say that framed sites, if done properly, have no problems in
getting good rankings in the search engines. Others claim that if search engine
optimization is important to you, never use frames.

In my opinion, the truth lies somewhere in

between. Yes, the use of frames does throw up a few issues when it comes to getting good
rankings in the search engines which don't understand frames. Hence, when you are
designing a new site, I would recommend that you avoid using frames, unless you have a
specific reason for doing so. However, if you already have a site which uses frames, all
is not lost. You can still get good rankings in the search engines even though you have
used frames. Furthermore, using frames also has its own advantages when it comes to search
engine placement, as we shall later on. This article assumes that you have a working knowledge of frames.

In case your site uses frames, the key to

getting good rankings lies in using the NOFRAMES tag. The NOFRAMES tag is intended to help
framed web sites display some content for those people who are using browsers which don't
understand frames. The search engines which don't understand frames also look at the
NOFRAMES tag. Hence, if you are using frames, you need to add content to the NOFRAMES tag.

What you should do is to add a complete web

page within the NOFRAMES tag. Ensure that this page repeats the important keywords for
your site a number of times. Also, in order to ensure that the content within the NOFRAMES
tag is as prominent as possible to the search engines, you should put the NOFRAMES tag
right after the FRAMESET tag. However, don't put the NOFRAMES before the FRAMESET tag. If
you do that, Internet Explorer will display your site correctly but Netscape will display
the content present in the NOFRAMES tag, rather than the content present within the
frames. Furthermore, you should also place a link to the page containing your navigation
links in the NOFRAMES tag. This ensures that the search engines are able to spider the
internal pages in your site.

Here's what the source code of your page might

look like:

One problem that occurs when you use frames is
that the search engines may often display one of the internal pages in your site in
response to a query. If this internal page does not contain a link to the home page of
your site, the user will be unable to navigate through your entire site. The solution, of
course, is to add a link to the home page from that internal page. When the visitor clicks
on that link, she is brought within the context of the frames.

However, simply adding a link to the home page
presents yet another problem. If the visitor had already been viewing that page within the
context of the frames and then clicks on the link to the home page, a new set of frames
will be created in addition to the frames already being used. In order to solve this
problem, you have to use the TARGET = "_top" command in the link, i.e. the HTML
code for the link would be something like

Wrapping things up:

As I mentioned earlier, there is also an
advantage to using frames. Since most Internet users are now using frames enabled
browsers, it means that not many people are going to know what's present in your NOFRAMES
tag. This allows you the repeat your keywords a few more times in the NOFRAMES than what
you could have done if you were writing a page which humans would also see (of course,
don't repeat the keywords too many times - that can cause your web site to be penalized
for spamming). You can also avoid using tables, graphics etc. which you would otherwise
need to use if humans would also view that page. However, it is debatable whether this
small advantage is sufficient to justify using frames.

Becoming an Open Directory Project Editor

Getting your site registered by the
Open Directory(http://www.dmoz.org) is vitally important
as far as search engine positioning is concerned.
However, sometimes, it may so happen that try as you might, you just do not manage to get
your site listed in the Open Directory. Or, it may also happen that the description under
which your site is listed is not optimum.

In this case, the only solution is to become
the editor of the category to which you want to submit your site. Here's how you should go
about doing it.

First, go to any category of the Open
Directory and click on the "become an editor" link at the top of the screen. If
that category does not contain such a link, simply go to a lower level category which does
contain such a link.

Now, read the third paragraph, which says that
the Open Directory does not bar editors who have business affiliations with the category.
In practice, however, it will reject just about any new editor who has a business
affiliation with the category. If you scroll down the page, you will find that the Open
Directory asks you whether you have any business affiliation with the category. If you
admit to having an affiliation with the category, you will most certainly be rejected.

Now, you may think that you can solve this
problem by not admitting that you have any business affiliation with the category.
However, the Open Directory also asks you about your experience or interest in the
category. For a category which deals with business related sites, it is very difficult to
project your expertise in it without admitting that you are affiliated with it.

Hence, your strategy should be to locate a
category in which you can legitimately show some experience and interest without having to
admit that you have any business affiliation. By far the easiest way to do this is to
become an editor of a regional category which deals with the city in which you live. Once
you can become an editor of one category, it is usually much easier to become the editor
of the category to which your site belongs. This is because when an existing editor
applies for a new category, the Open Directory does not ask for his/her experience or
interest in the category.

Here are the steps you should follow in order
to become an editor of the category applicable for your web site:

1) Start off by going to the Open Directory.
Click on the Regional category, then click on the continent in which you live, and then on
the country. In this way, drill down to the category for the city or locality in which you
live. Now, scroll down to the bottom of the page and see whether that category already has
an editor. If it does not, this is the category for which you should try and become an
editor. However, if this category already has an editor, don't apply to this category
because the Open Directory does not generally accept a new editor in a category which
already contains an editor. In this case, select a category below the current category
which does not have an editor.

2) Once you have selected the correct regional
category, click on the "become an editor" link at the top of the screen and fill
in your first name, last name, email address, username and password. For the
"Describe your experience and interest in this subject area:" text box, just say
something like "I am a resident of X.", where X is of course the name of your
city or locality. In the "What is your Business Affiliation with this category?"
text box, say something like "I have no business affiliation with this
category."

The Open Directory now asks you for 2 or 3
sites which you would have added to the category had you been an editor of the category.
The best way to do this is to let Yahoo! do the work
for you. Open a new browser window, go to Yahoo! and search for the name of your city.
Yahoo! will list several categories and sites for that city. Browse through these sites
and categories and select a site which is applicable for the category to which you are
applying. Now, open another browser window, go to the Open Directory's home page and type
in the domain name of the site in Open Directory's search box and note whether that site
is already listed in the Open Directory, either in the category to which you are applying
or elsewhere. If it is not listed, then this can be one of the sites which you should
submit. If it is already listed in the Open Directory, then ignore this site and select a
new site and check whether that site is already listed in the Open Directory.

In this way, select three sites which are
applicable for the category to which you are applying and which are not already present in
the Open Directory. Type in the URL for the first site in the appropriate text box. Now,
you need to select a proper title for the site. The title that you choose should always be
the official name of the site. If the official name of the site is not apparent from the
home page itself, browse around the site and look at the "About Us" or
"Contact Us" pages (if the site has those pages). Also, check out the bottom of
each page to see if the site has any Copyright notice. Once you know the official name of
the site, type it in the correct text box. Now, choose a proper description of the site.
Here are the rules for writing a proper description for the Open Directory:

i) Make sure that the description can tell a
visitor what the site is all about. Things like "Have a look at the site" does
not tell a visitor what the site does.

ii) Avoid using ALL CAPS or exclamation marks.
Phrases like "The best web site dealing with widgets!!" or "Offers the BEST
QUALITY, CHEAPEST WIDGETS you can find anywhere" are inappropriate.

iii) Don't capitalize every word in your
description - capitalize only the first word. Of course, if some of the words in the
description are proper nouns, then you should capitalize them.

iv) Write the description in the third person.

v) Don't make your description too long -
limit yourself to 15 words at the most.

vi) Check your description for typos and
grammatical mistakes.

vii) End your description with a period.

Once you have typed in the URL, Title and
Description of the first site, do the same for all the three sites and click on the Submit
button.

The Open Directory will soon send you an email
asking you to send a confirmation. Simply reply to that email to confirm your application.

3) If you have followed the above
instructions, within 2 or 3 weeks (if you are lucky, it will be sooner), you should get an
email saying that you have been accepted as an editor. Go to the Open Directory and log in
as an editor. Read the Directory Guidelines thoroughly and familiarize yourself with them.
Your objective from now on is to become an editor of the category which is applicable for
your site. When you apply to become an editor of this category, the Open Directory will
evaluate the quality of your editing in the category which you already edit, and will see
whether your editing meets all the guidelines. Hence, it is very important that you know
the guidelines thoroughly.

After this, check out whether there are any
unreviewed sites (i.e. sites which have been submitted to the category but which have not
yet been reviewed by an editor) in the category of which you are the editor. If so,
evaluate all the unreviewed sites, and add the sites which are applicable for the category
and delete the remaining sites which are not applicable. When you are adding sites, make
sure that these sites are really applicable for the category. Also make sure that the
Title and the Description that have been used are appropriate for the Open Directory. If
they are not, edit them so that they meet the Open Directory guidelines. Sometimes, you
may be at a loss to understand whether or not a particular site should be in the category.
If you are not feeling comfortable about adding a site, don't add it. There is no harm in
not adding a site which is applicable. However, if you add a site which is not applicable,
you will be at a disadvantage when you apply to become the editor of the category which is
applicable for your site.

Also, browse through all the sites which are
already present in the category. Edit the Title and Description of any site if it does not
meet the Open Directory guidelines. If you feel that a particular site that is listed in
the category does not belong to the category, post a message in the Editor Forum and ask
the other editors of the Open Directory as to whether the site belongs to the category. If
they say that the site does not belong to the category, delete the site.

4) Within 2 or 3 weeks from the time that you
are accepted as an editor, you should have cleaned up the category. By this, I mean that
your category should not have any unreviewed sites, and should not contain any site which
does not belong to the category. Also, the Title and the Description of all the sites
present in the category should follow the Open Directory guidelines.

Now, it is time to apply to the category which
is applicable for your site. Click on the "Bookmarks" link in the main Editor
page, scroll down and click on the "[Add @link]" link. In the "Category to
link to:" text box, type in the complete path to the category which is applicable for
your site. For instance, for the Computers: Consultants: Business Systems category, I
would type in "Computers/Consultants/Business Systems". In the "Link
name:" text box, type in a word or phrase which describes this category.

The Open Directory will now display a link to
the category in your Bookmarks section. It will also display the number of sites which are
present in the category and the number of new (unreviewed) sites. Note down the figure for
the number of unreviewed sites. If the category does not contain any unreviewed sites, the
Open Directory will only display the number of sites present in the category.

Now, go to the category which you want to
apply to and browse through all the sites. Generally, there will be some sites for which
the Title and/or the Description does not meet the Open Directory guidelines. Make a note
of these sites. Also note whether that category already has an editor.

Once you have gone through all the sites,
scroll down to the bottom of the category and click on the "edit" link. When you
are asked to explain why you want to apply to the category, mention the number of
unreviewed sites which are present in the category (assuming that the category does have
some unreviewed sites). Also, mention the fact that the Title and the Description for some
of the sites are inappropriate for the Open Directory. Give examples of a few such sites.
If that category does not already have an editor, mention that fact too.

Use the same methods discussed earlier to fill
up the remaining fields and click on the Submit button.

5) After applying to the new category, log in
as an editor every day or so, until you find that you are listed as an editor of that
category. Then, add your site to this category, or, if your site is already listed but
does not have an optimum description, change the description.

Wrapping things up:

Remember that other editors who edit higher
level categories will be looking at your category from time to time and may change your
site's description if it is not found to be appropriate. Hence, while you should try to
give your site an optimum description, you should not violate any of the Open Directory
guidelines.

Also, the Open Directory allows editors to
cool certain sites if they feel that these sites are the best in that category. If a site
is cooled, it is listed at the top of the category, even though its alphabetical placement
may have been a lot lower. Avoid the temptation to cool your own site. Because so many
editors try to cool their own sites, the Open Directory keeps a sharp look-out for this
practice. Cooling your own site will simply draw attention towards you.

1. Use Protected And User-Friendly Links

If you're promoting an affiliate program, instead of using the link provided by the affiliate program, take a few minutes and create a special link on your site that re-directs your visitor and protects your affiliate link.

Ensuring requested opt-in email is delivered to subscriber inboxes
is an increasingly difficult battle in the age of spam filtering.
Open and click thru response rates can be dramatically affected by
as much as 20-30% due to incorrect spam filter classification.

- Permission

Confirming that the people who ask for your information have
actually requested to be on your list is the number one step in the
battle for deliverability. You should be using a process called
confirmed opt-in or verified opt-in to send a unique link to the
attempted subscriber when they request information. Before adding
the person to your list they must click that unique link verifying
that they are indeed the same person that owns the email address and
requested to subscribe.

- Subscriber Addresses

When requesting website visitors to opt-in ask for their "real" or
"primary" email address instead of a free email address like Yahoo
or Hotmail. Free emails tend to be throw away accounts and
typically have a shorter lifetime than a primary ISP address.

- List Maintenance

Always promptly remove undeliverable addresses that bounce when
sending email to them. An address that bounces with a permanent
error 2-3 times in a 30 day period should be removed from the list.
ISP's track what percentage of your newsletters bounce and will
block them if you attempt to continually deliver messages to closed
subscriber mailboxes.

- Message Format

Usage of HTML messages to allow for text formatting, multiple
columns, images, and brand recognition is growing in popularity and
is widely supported by most email client software. Most spam is
also HTML formatted and thus differentiating between requested email
and spam HTML messages can be difficult. A 2004 study by AWeber.com
shows that plain text messages are undeliverable 1.15% of the time
and HTML only messages were undeliverable 2.3%. If sending HTML it
is important to always send a plain text alternative message, also
called text/HTML multi-part mime format.

- Content

Many ISP's filter based on the content that appears within the
message text.

- Website URL: Research potential newsletter advertisers before
allowing them to place ads in your newsletter issues. If they have
used their website URL to send spam, just having their URL appear in
your newsletter could cause the entire message to be filtered.

- Words/phrases: Choose your language carefully when crafting
messages. Avoid hot button topics often found in spam such as
medication, mortgages, making money, and pornography. If you do
need to use words that might be filtered, don't attempt to obfuscate
words with extra characters or odd spelling, you'll just make your
messages appear more spam like.

- Images: Avoid creating messages that are entirely images. Use
images sparingly, if at all. Commonly used open rate tracking
technology uses images to calculate opens. You may choose to
disable open rate tracking to avoid being filtered based on image
content.

- Attachments: With viruses running rampant and spreading thru
the usage of malicious email attachments many users are wary of
